Hidden Code Points to a Payments Feature
Evidence buried in TikTok's US iPhone app suggests the company is exploring person-to-person money transfers inside direct messages.
A TikTok spokesperson said, "The feature is not currently in testing in any market," indicating it remains in early development. As of August 18, 2026, no testing is underway. Should it launch, receivers would be able to "tap to accept" payments before an expiration date, while senders could receive status updates through push notifications or their inbox. The code also suggests senders can attach a note to a payment, much like the captions used on Venmo.
If the payments function goes live, it would be handled through TikTok Pay, which already operates in Southeast Asia. Whether ByteDance Ltd., TikTok's global owner, ever releases this capability remains uncertain; the engineering effort nevertheless signals it is weighing the possibility.
Why TikTok Wants In on Payments
By moving into commerce, social platforms hope to gather more user data and capture a larger share of consumer spending. ByteDance, based in Beijing, runs TikTok globally and important parts of its US operation; for years it has worked on fintech, developing and acquiring payment tools to boost spending and activity within the app.

Plenty of TikTok users put their Venmo, Cash App or another payment handle in their bios so people they meet on the platform can pay them outside TikTok. If TikTok allowed members to transfer funds in direct messages or elsewhere in the app, it could keep those interactions on-platform and profit from them.
TikTok already generates significant revenue from in-app purchases. According to Sensor Tower, TikTok has led the world in in-app purchase revenue since 2022, with consumers spending more than $2.9 billion on TikTok so far this year. U.S. users shell out more on TikTok than they do on YouTube, Facebook, or Instagram.
Beyond purchases on TikTok Shop, the app also sells digital coins that users can turn into virtual gifts for livestream hosts and creators, gifts that can eventually be converted into cash.
Public recruiting posts show that TikTok and ByteDance are looking to fill finance-related positions both in the US and internationally.
A Gradual Fintech Push
The company has been laying groundwork for payments for some time. The work includes obtaining payment licenses and constructing in-app payment systems. TikTok's existing payment system in Southeast Asia handles TikTok Shop transactions, and extending it to person-to-person transfers would be a logical next step. That would let TikTok collect more data and potentially profit from transactions that currently move through Venmo, Cash App, or other outside services.
No Guarantee of Launch
The feature may never launch. TikTok has not committed to releasing it, and hidden code alone does not mean a rollout will happen.
