Relay Shuts Down as Founder Heads to Google's Chrome Team

Summary:
  • Relay, an AI startup launched in 2021, is shutting down, with paying customers losing access on September 14.
  • Founder and CEO Jacob Bank is joining Google's Chrome team as VP of Product, returning to the company he left after more than six years.
  • Google says its Gemini assistant, already available in Chrome, has topped 1 billion users.

Jacob Bank spent the last few years building an AI startup. Now he's going back to Google, and the startup he leaves behind is shutting down.

This isn't an acquisition. Google is just hiring the people.

A Short Run for Relay

Relay launched in 2021 as an AI-powered alternative to Zapier.

Zapier is the tool that helps people connect apps and automate work. Relay's pitch was simple: let AI handle the repetitive stuff so people can focus on the interesting parts.

Most automation tools are rigid. They do what you tell them, nothing more.

Relay wanted AI to take on jobs that usually need a human touch, like drafting a document, cleaning up copy, or keeping a project on track.

Instead of setting up rules by hand, you'd hand the task to AI and let it run.

It didn't last. Bank announced Monday that paying customers will lose access on September 14.

Free users already lost access on August 15. The company first announced the closure back in July, so the final dates came after a longer goodbye.

For customers, that July announcement was the first warning sign. Monday's message turned it into a deadline.

A Return to Google

Bank knows this employer well. He joined Google in 2015, when the company acquired his scheduling startup Timeful.

When a hot startup shuts down, it's a reminder to build wealth steadily, so grab the free Always Be Buying eBook.

He stayed more than six years, working on Google Chat, Gmail, and Google Calendar before leaving to build Relay. Now he's back, this time as VP of Product for Chrome.

According to his LinkedIn, Bank will oversee Chrome's product and developer-relations work. Some of his Relay teammates are joining the Chrome team with him.

In a post on X, Bank said the move is part of the same mission he's been on for years.

"I've spent my whole career doing one thing: building tools that help people get more done with AI, without sacrificing their personal creativity or insights," he said.

"And joining the Chrome team is an ideal opportunity to bring those experiences to many, many more people."

AI Is Already Inside Chrome

Google isn't starting from zero. Its Gemini assistant is already available in Chrome as an optional in-browser helper.

That's a big base for Bank to build on.

Right now, Gemini in Chrome is a helper you can turn on or leave off. Bank's arrival suggests Google wants AI to feel more central to the browsing experience.

What exactly he and his team will do is still unclear.

Bank has called Chrome "a perfect place to collaborate with agents," which in AI speak means programs that can carry out tasks for you.

He also promised more details soon: "We have some really ambitious plans to help you work with AI in Chrome to get things done, and I'll have more to share soon."

What This Means for You

For Relay customers, the practical part comes down to a date. If you're in either group, there's no avoiding the calendar.

For everyone else, the shutdown is a reminder that AI tools can vanish even when they're useful. The software you rely on today isn't guaranteed to be around next year.

It's also a reminder that today's favorite startup tool can be tomorrow's shutdown notice.

For investors, the story is about Google. The company is putting people who spent years building AI productivity software in charge of Chrome, the browser that already has Gemini inside.

That doesn't guarantee the next big thing will come from Chrome. But it does show where Google thinks the future is, and it's moving its talent in that direction.

For your portfolio, that's a small signal worth noting. The browser you open every day is where Google is choosing to make its stand.

That's something to watch whether you care about Google stock or just want to know what your software will look like next year.

Startups may fail, but your financial future doesn't have to, so download the free Always Be Buying eBook.

What Is Wealth Preservation? How To Protect Your Money From Anything
  • Wealth preservation is an investing strategy built around keeping the money you've already made instead of chasing growth.
  • It leans on assets that hold steady when markets fall - gold, Treasury bonds, and companies that keep earning through wars, crashes, and pandemics.

Why Is Everything So Expensive? Why Prices May Never Come Back Down
  • Official inflation is 3.4% and prices are up 32% since 2020, but rent (41%), gas (47%), car insurance (64%) and ground beef (79%) all outran the 28% median wage.
