A Traditional Bank's SpaceX Position Nears $1 Billion

Published Aug 18, 2026
Share:
Summary:
  • A US regulatory filing disclosed Intesa Sanpaolo's 5.66 million SpaceX shares, worth about $966 million as of June 30.
  • The position represents roughly one-third of the bank's entire US equity portfolio, which totals $2.92 billion.
  • After a 16% drop in SpaceX's stock price, the holding has since declined to approximately $809 million.

A Hidden Giant Emerges

SpaceX is widely known for its record-setting stock-market launch. Yet one of its biggest shareholders is not a renowned tech fund or a famous billionaire investor. Instead, it's an Italian bank that most have never come across.

A recent SEC filing revealed that at the end of June, the Italian bank owned 5.66 million SpaceX shares worth approximately $966 million. That position stood as the largest single asset in the bank's US stock portfolio, which totaled $2.92 billion. Put differently, this one stake accounted for about 33% of everything the bank owned in American equities.

SpaceX's market capitalization now sits near $2 trillion. Reuters first brought this stake to light.

A Quiet Bet Since 2023

A bank spokesperson said, "This wasn't a recent purchase." Intesa first acknowledged in October 2023 that it had put money into SpaceX while the company was still private, though it didn't disclose the size at the time. Now that the regulatory filing has been made public, the scale of that bet is finally clear.

A surprising stake like this shows why consistent investing matters, so get the free Always Be Buying eBook.

Private-market investments of this scale are rare for a traditional lender. Intesa built the position while SpaceX was still private, and the bank's access to private markets gave it an opportunity that most public-market investors never get. The holding now ranks as the largest position in the bank's US equity portfolio.

The episode highlights the power of early access. Investors who can get into a promising private company before its public listing often unlock enormous gains that ordinary market participants simply cannot replicate.

The Current Picture

Of course, the stock hasn't stood still since June. SpaceX shares have slipped 16% from that point, dragging the value of the bank's holding down to about $809 million today.

Beyond the numbers, the story serves as a practical lesson. Consistent, long-term investing - even in unexpected places - can produce outsized rewards. Those who quietly accumulate positions in transformative companies often end up reaping benefits that headline-chasing traders miss. The bank's patience and access to private markets have turned a once-obscure holding into a cornerstone of its portfolio, and the impact is likely to be felt for years to come.

Intesa Sanpaolo is among the largest banking groups, with roots tracing back to the 16th century. The bank manages a vast portfolio of assets for clients, and its willingness to take concentrated positions in high-growth private companies stands out among traditional lenders. While most banks favor diversified portfolios of blue-chip stocks, Intesa's outsized bet on SpaceX reflects a more aggressive investment strategy that has drawn attention from analysts and investors alike.

The stake also underscores a growing trend of traditional financial institutions seeking exposure to private space ventures, a sector that was once the domain of venture capital funds and wealthy individual investors. For a bank of Intesa's size and conservative reputation, holding such a large position in a single private company is unusual, and it signals a shift in how established financial players view the commercial space industry.

The bank's decision to hold through the recent pullback suggests confidence in SpaceX's long-term trajectory, even as short-term volatility persists.

Fiat Currency Runs on Trust, and the World Just Stopped Trusting the Dollar
  • Gold has overtaken US treasuries as the world's top reserve asset, and central banks are now buying less US debt and more gold.
  • The US dollar is a fiat currency, meaning it's backed by a promise rather than gold, so it loses value when fewer countries want to hold it.

US National Debt Hits $40 Trillion: Why the Economy Hasn't Collapsed Yet

Your 401k Is Fueling the AI Bubble
