What is happening
Tikehau Capital is seeking a new strategic investor to support its next expansion push, according to people familiar with the discussions. The Paris-based alternative asset manager has engaged a number of overseas firms and investment groups to discuss a potential stake sale in the company.
An investment bank is advising on the effort, which has been underway for months. A Tikehau representative declined to comment.
The backdrop in asset management
Asset managers ramping up in private markets have been pairing with strategic partners to secure capital, widen distribution, and bolster acquisition capacity. Last month, Bloomberg reported that French investment firm Wendel SE brought in advisers to search for collaborators to advance its private asset management platform.
Among the busiest purchasers of stakes in alternative asset managers are Blue Owl Capital Inc., Blackstone Inc., and Goldman Sachs Group Inc.'s Petershill Partners.

Scale, ownership, and targets
The founders still control the firm and have previously said they are weighing a US listing as industry consolidation raises the bar for scale.
As of June 30, Tikehau's assets under management totaled €53.5 billion. In February, the company reset its target for this year's AUM to at least €60 billion, down from the previous goal of more than €65 billion that was established during its 2022 capital markets day. The stock has fallen more than 20 percent since its 2017 Paris listing.
Among its largest holders is a vehicle representing a consortium of French financial firms, and backers also include health insurer MACSF and Singapore's Temasek. Third quarter results are due Oct. 22.
Why it matters for your portfolio
A strategic investor could bring in fresh capital and distribution while Tikehau pushes deeper into private markets and resets its fundraising bar. The firm remains founder controlled, has floated a potential US listing, and its shares are down since debut.
