A Louisville Factory With a Battery Bet
Anthro Energy has spent four years working on a material most drivers never think about. That changed on Tuesday with the groundbreaking of a new Louisville, Kentucky facility that could give solid-state batteries a boost.
The factory makes electrolyte, the substance inside a battery that carries charge between its positive and negative sides. Today's lithium-ion batteries rely on a flammable liquid for that job.
Anthro's version starts as a liquid and then hardens after it soaks into the electrodes. That hardening step opens the door to solid and semi-solid-state batteries.
The plant's planned output is 25 gigawatt-hours of electrolyte. The company says that is enough to support more than 300,000 electric vehicle battery packs.
Production is scheduled to start in 2028. Anthro wants the site to anchor what it calls an emerging U.S. battery supply chain.
Anthro CEO and co-founder David Mackanic says the site sits within a 12-hour drive of most U.S. battery factories. Seventy percent of today's U.S. battery production facilities fall in that radius, he says.
That makes Louisville a convenient hub for domestic customers. FEOC, short for foreign entity of concern, is a label that can cut a supplier out of U.S. government-backed work.
"When it opens, we'll be serving domestic, high-spec customers, this emerging ecosystem for battery production where they frankly just need electrolytes," Mackanic said. "A domestic source of China-free supply, FEOC-free supply."

The Money Behind the Groundbreaking
The funding is a mix of federal programs and state incentives. The Department of Energy is putting in $24.9 million under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
The Inflation Reduction Act adds an $18.4 million investment tax credit. Kentucky is chipping in $2.3 million in tax incentives.
That state money is tied to creating 110 permanent jobs at the plant. Anthro's first fundraising round happened only four years ago.
This factory is a fast move for a young company. Mackanic says the federal money helps bridge what the industry calls the "valley of death," the stretch where battery materials companies often fail before they reach real production.
"The Department of Energy award solves a lot of the chicken or the egg problem," he said. He also put the need simply: "To get into big applications, you have to have big production."
At first, the factory will run electrolyte formulas made by other companies. Later, Anthro hopes to make more of its own polymer electrolyte, Proteus, which fits into existing production lines with only small changes.
What Solid-State Could Mean for Your Next Car
The payoff is about safety and range. Compared with lithium-ion, solid-state batteries pack higher energy density, meaning more power in the same space, and they remove the flammable liquid that makes fires a risk.
They also block dendrites, tiny metal growths that can poke through a battery and cause a short circuit. Producing these batteries at scale while keeping them durable and affordable remains an unsolved challenge.
Depending on the formulation, Anthro's hardened electrolyte can make a cell 10 to 15 times stronger than a liquid version, Mackanic says. It can even be flexible, and Mackanic sees uses in EVs, drones, and robots.
Chinese battery makers are reportedly planning to test solid-state production in 2027.
So this factory is not an instant fix. It is a bet that the U.S. can build its own battery-materials supply chain before the next generation of batteries arrives.
For investors, that bet is the real story. Solid-state has been a promise for a long time, but a real factory with a real address turns the promise into a schedule.
For car buyers, the stakes are just as easy to name. More range, less fire risk, and a better chance that the next EV actually feels like an upgrade.
