What changed
Mayfair Gold said Monday that its flagship Fenn-Gibb project, located in northern Ontario, has been accepted into the province's One Project, One Process program, designed to cut government review timelines in half. In Toronto trading the same day, shares climbed as much as 13%.
Who is behind Mayfair now
Muddy Waters Capital LLC, founded by well-known short seller Carson Block, is Mayfair's biggest shareholder. Block joined the Toronto-listed miner's board in 2024 after a successful proxy contest that replaced the prior board. That year he also launched a vehicle focused on gains in metals and mining shares, as short sellers sought alternative sources of returns. Mayfair was co-founded in 2019 by Henry Heeney, an early-stage mining investor, along with Sean Pi.
The project and the provincial push
Fenn-Gibb contains 4.3 million ounces of indicated gold resources and is the fourth project brought under Ontario's push to speed mine development. In February, the province moved Kinross Gold's Great Bear project onto an accelerated permitting track, following the addition of Canada Nickel's Crawford project a month earlier. Premier Doug Ford has stressed developing Ontario's mineral resources to strengthen domestic supply chains as global trade tensions intensify.
According to the office of the minister of energy and mines, the expedited pathway will continue to meet the province's duty to consult Indigenous communities prior to any project moving forward. "The new framework provides a more coordinated, transparent and timely approach to project reviews and consultation with Indigenous communities," the office said in a statement.

Timeline, funding and what to watch
Assuming permits are obtained via the program, Mayfair anticipates making a build decision in 2028 at the earliest, and is aiming for first gold in 2030. To support development, the company arranged a proposed financing package in October of up to C$310 million (US$222 million) with Macquarie Bank, toward an estimated C$450 million in initial capital.
Why it matters: a coordinated review trims a key bottleneck for mine schedules and gives investors clearer markers on permitting and build timing. With part of the upfront capital outlined, the gap between permits and financing is also easier to size in your models.
