IndiGo Will Fit A350s With Three-Class Cabins As It Expands Long-Haul

Published Nov 2, 2026
Share:
Summary:
  • IndiGo is adding a three-cabin layout to its Airbus SE A350s to move beyond a pure no-frills model.
  • The first A350-900s are slated to join in Q2 2028, and seating for the first 10 jets is locked.
  • Those aircraft will carry 16 business-class lie flats plus premium economy and economy, and A321 XLR flights to Amsterdam will continue until the A350s arrive.

What the plan is

IndiGo is bringing a three-class setup to its A350 fleet to broaden its appeal and support longer international routes, Chief Executive Officer Willie Walsh said in New Delhi. The airline, run by InterGlobe Aviation Ltd., expects its first A350-900 deliveries during the second quarter of 2028.

IndiGo already controls roughly 65% of India's domestic market, and these widebodies are central to its long-haul ambitions, pairing with its A321 XLR network.

Fleet and operations changes

The first 10 A350s have a finalized layout that includes 16 business-class seats that convert to lie flats, along with premium economy and economy sections. The A350s are meant to sit alongside IndiGo's A321 XLR operations rather than replace them.

Strategy and other moves

To preserve valuable slots, Walsh said IndiGo will keep operating A321 XLR services to Amsterdam until the A350s come online. He also highlighted Mumbai and the future Navi Mumbai airport as pivotal for long-haul growth.

On fuel, the airline is assessing the hedging strategies used by Indian carriers. In his words: "There are no plans to start hedging until the review is complete."

When businesses evolve their strategies, investors who adapt often gain a lasting advantage. We're hosting our first ever investor livestream on 11/17 to show you how to use ChatGPT and Claude to invest like a pro, hosted by Briefs Finance CEO Jaspreet Singh. Save your seat.

Why it matters for investors

A three-cabin A350 signals a push for higher-yield seats and more competitive long-haul economics, while the XLR-to-Amsterdam bridge helps protect future network options. The review of fuel hedging underscores near-term exposure to price swings, with any policy shift potentially affecting costs and margins. The bottom line: timing the A350 roll-in around Q2 2028, anchoring in Mumbai, and targeting premium cabins points to a bid for richer revenue per seat on international routes - and a new chapter for the country's dominant carrier.
