What the survey shows
AI prompts ethical debates and job-loss worries, yet a sizable chunk of retail investors is leaning in. In eToro's June online survey of 1,000 U.S. retail traders, 41% said they are willing to use - or are already using - AI to select or tweak holdings.
The tilt is even stronger among younger investors. Narrow the view to ages 18 to 44 and that share jumps to 71%. Breaking it down further, 31% of investors 18 to 34 and 38% of those 35 to 44 say they already use services like ChatGPT to inform what they buy or sell.
Among respondents open to or already using AI, almost six in ten would permit AI to both adjust positions and place trades, signaling comfort with automation doing more than just research.
Why investors say they will use it
Two reasons top the list for turning to algorithms: saving significant research time by relying on AI, and a belief that this technology represents where investing is headed.
Smart investors lean on fresh tools to gain a thoughtful edge in markets. We're hosting our first ever investor livestream on 11/17 to show you how to use ChatGPT and Claude to invest like a pro, hosted by Briefs Finance CEO Jaspreet Singh. Save your seat.
About one third of all respondents went further, saying AI could surpass the stock-picking of a traditional fund manager.
How AI enthusiasm shows up in markets
Interest is not limited to portfolio helpers. The survey found 11% of respondents expect to boost their exposure to AI-related stocks sometime this year. That follows a strong run for the theme, with Nvidia up nearly 200% year to date and C3.ai climbing around 275% in 2023.
Last month, the broader market crossed into bull-market territory alongside a surge in shares linked to this new technology. Even so, many experts argue the AI space reflects a durable new tech market rather than a bubble.
Learning how to use new technology can quietly improve long term investment decisions. On 11/17, our CEO Jaspreet Singh goes live for our first ever investor livestream on how to use ChatGPT and Claude to invest like a pro. Register to join him.
