What is happening
Bláa Lónid hf, the company behind the Blue Lagoon geothermal seawater spa, got the go ahead from investors on Friday to pursue a listing on the country's primary stock exchange. The planned offering will be open to large institutions and retail buyers.
Why the earlier plan stalled
The firm prepared for a 2022 debut, then stepped back when a series of eruptions near Grindavík periodically interfered with tourism and operations from late 2023 through mid 2025. Because the site sits immediately adjacent to an active volcano, crews raised earthen barriers to protect the spa, and the spa itself was not harmed.
The business behind the brand
Blue Lagoon is described as Iceland's most visited attraction, drawing about one million guests a year and sitting near the country's main international airport. The pool formed as a byproduct of geothermal power generation next to the Svartsengi plant, where locals started bathing in the 1980s; its seawater, rich in silica, algae and minerals, gives the water its distinctive color. Shareholders also approved a stock-option program for all 700 employees to buy shares worth 1.5 million kronur ($12,300) per year for five years.

Investor takeaway
If the listing proceeds, investors would get a route into a tourism-led business anchored by Iceland's best known attraction near an active volcano. The IPO's planned access for both institutions and the general public, plus the approved employee option plan, outlines who can participate and on what terms.
