What Niccol said on the record
Asked by Bloomberg Television's Romaine Bostick if Starbucks might adopt a multi-brand model, CEO Brian Niccol replied, "It's one of those possibilities." He added, "Our scale provides an opportunity to go beyond just being a one-brand company," and left the door open by saying, "But is it an opportunity down the road? I would never say never."
The idea would mirror the setup at his former employer Yum! Brands Inc., owner of Taco Bell and KFC. Niccol also said Starbucks does not need acquisitions to meet its growth targets, though putting other businesses alongside Starbucks in a portfolio that uses the company's strengths could be interesting later.
Where Starbucks stands now
Niccol, who led Chipotle before joining Starbucks in 2024, made the comments weeks after Starbucks dismissed speculation about pursuing a takeover of Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc.
Near term, the plan is inward. Niccol said the focus is on better stores, menus and service, and Starbucks has now delivered five straight quarters of comparable sales growth.

Market reaction and what to watch
Shares slipped 2.3% at 10:27 a.m. in New York on Friday. Even so, through Thursday's close the shares were up roughly 25% for the year, beating the S&P 500 Index's nearly 13% advance.
Why that matters for your portfolio: leadership is entertaining a multi-brand future, but today's execution is single brand. Track comparable sales, store operations and any signs Starbucks is building capacity for more than coffee over time.
