What Nagel said
Joachim Nagel told Bloomberg on Friday that consumer prices have accelerated again and could continue rising over the next few weeks, largely due to more expensive energy. He emphasized, "Medium-term inflation expectations must remain firmly anchored at our inflation target of 2%," adding that the Governing Council will watch price trends closely and "act decisively if necessary."
The latest decision and the setup
His remarks followed Thursday's decision to leave borrowing costs unchanged after two quarter-point moves since the Iran war pushed energy costs higher. Nagel called the hold "wasn't an easy one," reflecting recent inflation dynamics. President Christine Lagarde said there was a discussion about hiking this month before a unanimous choice to pause. The deposit rate is 2.5%, which is the upper limit of the ECB's range where policy is considered neutral for growth.
Risks, signals, and December
Nagel noted a silver lining: "On the positive side, no significant second-round effects have been observed so far." To keep it that way, he said, anchoring inflation expectations is "crucial," calling that "a key message of yesterday's interest rate decision." Bloomberg, citing people with knowledge, reported on Thursday that officials stand prepared to raise rates once more in December if the inflation outlook does not improve. Inflation is seen rising to 3.9% in October from 3.8% a month earlier, underscoring the delicate balance between growth and price stability.

Why it matters for your portfolio
In plain English: the ECB is on hold for now, but not on autopilot. A firmer inflation print or stickier energy pressures could reopen the door to another hike in December, especially with the deposit rate already at the top of neutral. That keeps rate sensitive assets on a short leash, while steady expectations help credit and core European equities lean on clearer guidance.
