The deal and who is in
Cohere said Thursday it wrapped the initial close of a large funding that puts its valuation at $20.5 billion, roughly tripling in a year, with the full raise anticipated to reach as much as $5 billion. Commitments include the Government of Canada and Nvidia, alongside an earlier announced $600 million from European retailer Schwarz Group.
The company wouldn't specify how much of the potential $5 billion is secured so far; according to Chief Financial Officer Francois Chadwick, the initial close accounts for "most of it." The $20.5 billion figure excludes new cash from the round. Should the deal finish at the intended scale, it would mark the largest private capital raise in Canada's history.
What leaders said and the Canada angle
Cohere intends to remain headquartered in Canada. The Government of Canada pledged as much as $1.14 billion for the company, and Prime Minister Mark Carney said the company is expected to put roughly $1.2 billion into new domestic computing infrastructure by 2030.
"The most powerful AI systems are concentrated in a very small number of companies, in a very small number of countries," Carney said. "That concentration carries risks: to cost, to resilience and to sovereignty." CEO Aidan Gomez called the new capital "critical for the next chapter of our growth" and said it "strengthens Canada's ability to develop AI on its own terms." Gomez also said the company aims to add over 1,000 new roles, alongside investment in infrastructure and research.

Products, growth and next steps
Founded in 2019 and based in Toronto, Cohere provides configurable AI products to enterprises instead of targeting consumers. It is building AI agents and focused applications for coding, search and cybersecurity. The cofounders are Aidan Gomez, Nick Frosst and Ivan Zhang.
Chadwick said Cohere has attracted more customers by emphasizing security and efficient AI, matching demand from clients facing rising computing costs and AI-driven hacks. He declined to comment on current revenue. According to the company, annual recurring revenue was up by over 165% as of the end of September compared with a year earlier. In October 2025, Gomez said that Cohere could IPO "soon." Chadwick offered no comment on whether plans for a public listing had been updated.
Why it matters for your portfolio
A $20.5 billion valuation, major public support and a potential $5 billion raise highlight investor appetite for enterprise AI. The pitch centers on security and cost efficiency - exactly where corporate IT budgets are feeling pressure from higher compute spend and cyber risk. The bottom line: if the company sustains that more-than-165% ARR trajectory and follows through on Canada buildout plans, watch names tied to AI infrastructure and enterprise AI adoption.
