Weil said Wednesday that its management committee has recommended the partnership pursue an orderly wind-down. The guidance followed partner departures and reports that merger talks with Willkie Farr & Gallagher had concluded days ago.
Scale, legacy and current commitments
Weil counts roughly 1,200 lawyers worldwide and reportedly brought in more than $2 billion in revenue in 2025 across its multinational operations. The firm highlighted its 90-plus years of work - "For more than 90 years, Weil, Gotshal & Manges has had the privilege of advising clients on some of their most consequential matters" - and noted it will continue client service and colleague support during the unwind in the months ahead. Weil has long been a marquee name in bankruptcy work, advising in the filings of Lehman Brothers, General Motors and Enron.

What it means for investors
Why it matters: leadership is mapping a controlled exit while pledging uninterrupted client service, which can cushion disruption for counterparties and case timelines that touch the broader market. The bottom line: a prominent Wall Street legal brand is preparing to wind down, and a near term partner vote will determine the next step.
