What changed and why
Statistics South Africa shifted the GDP base year to 2022 and released the updated series in Pretoria on Thursday, part of a refresh it generally does every five years. The new framework leans on 2022 production patterns, which reshaped sector weights to better reflect how the economy is structured.
Following the overhaul, the 2025 size of the economy is now put at 5.3% above earlier estimates. In nominal terms, last year's GDP now stands at 8 trillion rand, or 457 billion dollars, versus 7.6 trillion rand before the change.
Which sectors moved
The uplift was broad across industries, but mining saw the biggest boost, with its contribution rising 12.5% after the changes. According to the agency, the main driver was expanding the scope and improving measurement of illegal mining, which has proliferated as the price of gold has surged.
Finance, real estate and business services posted the second largest increase at 9.1%. The measured share of the unobserved economy - parts of the informal sector and illicit or illegal activities - rose to 8.7% from 7.3%. Notable additions include street hawkers, shebeens, informal recycling, and illegal activities such as narcotics and prostitution.

Fiscal and market implications
Johann Els, chief economist at PSG Financial Services, said, "Based on the revised GDP estimates, the gross debt ratio for the current fiscal year could fall from 78.2% to an estimated 74.5% of GDP." He added, "The consolidated budget deficit could fall from 3.9% to an estimated 3.7% of GDP."
National Treasury did not provide an immediate reply to questions on how the revision might change its fiscal estimates. Credit watchers, including Moody's Ratings, have flagged better debt dynamics as a factor they will monitor for potential further upgrades, with the rating on an improving trend but still below investment grade.
What this means for your portfolio
Bigger GDP shrinks ratios even if cash flows do not change, which can make sovereign debt loads look lighter and nudge credit assessments. For equity and bond holders, that can influence sentiment, risk premia, and how rules-based funds tied to fiscal metrics rebalance. The bottom line: watch how ratings agencies process these revisions and how local yields and South Africa-linked assets trade in response.
