Short positions ease before earnings
Data from S3 Partners show bears have eased off BYD Co., with short interest falling to its lowest level since March. Momentum away from bearish bets picked up once China reduced export tax rebates, and after the European Union put a cap on imports of hybrid cars, trimming some of the sector's policy overhang.
Even with lighter shorting, the shares are headed for a third straight monthly decline, leaving the year-to-date slide around 26%.
Profit rebound in focus
Analysts expect BYD to post 12.1 billion yuan in net income for the September quarter on Thursday, roughly $1.8 billion and nearly 55% above last year's weak comparison. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, per-vehicle profit, leaving out input from BYD Electronic International Co., is roughly $1,230 for the quarter, 14% higher than in the June quarter.
What investors are watching
The bigger challenge is reigniting confidence in the long-term story amid sluggish domestic demand, geopolitics and cost inflation. Over the past few months, analysts have kept trimming 2027 profit forecasts, Bloomberg data show.
"Declining short interest doesn't necessarily mean that the sentiment will turn around and the share price will rebound," said Kevin Net, a portfolio manager with Financiere de L Echiquier. Investors are zeroed in on proof that overseas growth is building and that margins in China hold up despite persistent discounting pressure.

Why it matters for your portfolio
The setup is a tug-of-war between improving near-term earnings and questions about pricing power and demand later on. If overseas sales keep scaling and home-market margins hold, that helps the bull case; if not, the drag from longer-dated estimate cuts can stick around.
