Ministry's remarks
The Finance Ministry's monthly economic review, published Thursday, emphasized liquidity, noting: "Going forward, the efficacy of the recent rate hike in containing secondary inflation effects will depend on the central bank's active liquidity management." The point is straightforward: tighter policy only cools prices if it flows through the financial system, which depends on how much spare cash banks have to lend.
What the central bank has done
The Reserve Bank of India increased its policy benchmark by a quarter point to 5.5 percent earlier this month, the first such move in almost four years. Alongside that, it has been siphoning off surplus cash to deter wagers against the rupee and to firm up monetary conditions.
Growth, risks and what it means for markets
Price pressures have picked up, with consumer inflation approaching a two year peak in September and sitting near the top of the RBI's 2%-6% band. The ministry also flagged potential upside risks from an intensifying El Niño and stronger festive-season demand, plus elevated crude costs and shipping-route disruptions in the Middle East that could lift input costs.

On growth, the economy likely expanded about 7.3% in the July to September quarter after 7.8% in the prior three months. Official second quarter GDP is due Nov. 30. According to the ministry, momentum should be underpinned by domestic demand, investment, and structural reforms for the remainder of the fiscal year that ends in March. The bottom line: with tighter liquidity and persistent inflation risks both in play, rate sensitivity across banks, borrowers and bond markets stays front and center for your portfolio.
