What the ECI numbers mean
The Employment Cost Index tracks changes in wages and benefits. It ticked up 0.8% from the prior quarter and 3.4% versus a year earlier before adjusting for inflation. Strip out price increases and compensation was down 0.4% over the year to September, while real wages fell 0.6% over that same period.
Within the headline, wage and salary growth for civilian workers cooled to 0.7% in the quarter that ended in September. On a 12 month view, wages rose 3.1% - the softest since 2021.
Where pay pressure is easing
Wage growth softened across multiple industries, including construction and leisure and hospitality. Pay in service occupations more broadly slowed to its weakest annual pace since 2016. One cost line moved the other way: private employers' health benefit expenses jumped 6.4% over the year to September, tying the fastest increase since 2005.
What to watch next
The labor market has held steady this year, with limited layoffs and modest hiring, but many workers are still contending with faster price growth. As Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh put it Wednesday after the Fed kept interest rates unchanged, "Job gains have kept pace with the workforce, and the unemployment rate has changed little. But inflation remains elevated." Next week's October jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics will offer another read on hiring and pay.

In plain English: slower wage growth colliding with firmer inflation can pressure margins and spending-sensitive stocks. Health benefit costs rising at a 2005 style clip also matters for employers' budgets, especially in labor heavy sectors.
