Inside the meeting
Altman sat down with Samsung leaders in Yongin on Saturday to push deeper collaboration on memory and the backbone for AI systems. Samsung said roughly 50 leaders across its electronics, finance, and biotech units took part, focusing on how AI could transform industries, guide corporate choices, and unlock new business lines over the next ten years.
The talks followed a previously disclosed pact that would furnish memory chips for OpenAI's Stargate infrastructure initiative and pair the two sides on AI data-center rollouts, among them floating sites at sea. Samsung added that it is speeding up AI use across research, manufacturing, marketing and corporate operations.
The supply squeeze and the spending race
All this is happening as shortages across a wide range of memory products hit the electronics industry and lift chip prices. As data-center operators scale, supply competition is intensifying, and the five biggest contenders in the AI infrastructure race expect to put more than $3 trillion to work in the coming years. Memory makes up about one third of data-center costs.
Why it matters for your portfolio
Altman is the latest US tech chief to visit South Korea, which leads in advanced memory and is seeing faster AI adoption among companies and consumers. Nvidia's Jensen Huang and AMD's Lisa Su have each made two trips since last year to reinforce supply chains, and industry leaders say chip output is struggling to keep up with demand.

The bottom line: memory is central to AI data centers, and with multi-trillion dollar buildouts looming, firms tied to the memory stack and to these infrastructure projects could benefit if tight supply keeps prices firm.
