What the reassessment found
A sweep of strategic deposits turned up sizeable upgrades. Xinhua, citing the Ministry of Natural Resources, reported that retained rhenium resources increased by more than 200%. The tally for gold and nickel expanded by volumes equivalent to roughly 50 and 30 large deposits. Gallium, indium, tantalum and vanadium grew by the equivalent of more than ten large deposits after looking again at associated material that is lower grade or difficult to use.
How the review was done
The work ran for a year and focused on 17 strategic minerals. It covered more than 1,800 producing mines plus large and medium sized mining districts. Over 100 institutions and nearly 2,000 survey staff took part, spanning 27 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities.
What it could mean for supply
Separately, China has identified the country's first paleofluvial lacustrine zircon placer deposit in Baicheng, Xinjiang, a find that could materially lift domestic zircon supply. The country has long leaned on imports for zircon, which is the feedstock for zirconium used in nuclear reactor fuel rod cladding and in high temperature aerospace alloys. Rhenium also feeds into high temperature superalloys for jet engine components.
