What happened
About 250 watchmen at the nation's busiest container complex will keep negotiating past a Sunday deadline, pausing a walkout threat that could have halted cargo flows. On Friday, the PMA said talks would be extended until 5 p.m. on Nov. 4.
The prior agreement expired in July 2025, and both sides have been meeting regularly with help from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. A request for comment was not immediately returned by Local 26 President Luisa Gratz.
How big the risk was
Local 26 members handle security duties at six terminals spanning Los Angeles and Long Beach. On Oct. 27, the PMA warned that ILWU dockworkers and marine clerks - covered by separate contracts and not parties to this dispute - are anticipated to stand with the watchmen if a strike happens.
The PMA also cautioned that a stoppage at the affected sites could reach roughly 85% of Long Beach volumes and around one third at Los Angeles. The neighboring ports reported record throughput last month and, taken together, handle about a third of the country's seaborne containerized goods.

What this means for your portfolio
The extension avoids an immediate shock at the LA-Long Beach complex, a corridor that handles about a third of the country's seaborne containerized goods. Keep an eye on the Nov. 4 deadline and any updates from the PMA or union leadership as negotiations continue.
