What the numbers show
Macau's gaming take fell for a fifth consecutive month in October, coming in at 21.68 billion patacas, or $2.68 billion, which is 10% lower than a year earlier. The result was also about 18% below the pre-pandemic 2019 level.
Traffic up, spend soft
During Golden Week, arrivals reached 1.14 million, a 15.5% increase from the prior year, yet Jefferies noted the heavier footfall did not lift casino spending. September brought 3.2 million arrivals, up 16% year on year, and the city's October visitor figures are due later this month.
Why premium play is dragging
High-end play remains weak amid China's slowing economy and tighter oversight of wealthy residents' overseas spending. A cooler stock market has also damped player sentiment. Macau enjoyed strong growth in the back half of last year as an AI-fueled stock rally boosted wealth, which now makes this year's comparisons tougher as that wealth effect fades.
