What the Student List is asking banks to do
In a late Saturday statement, the Student List called for "increased supervision and control of cross-border financial transactions and potential flight of capital from the country" during the handover of power. The bloc said it does not intend to restrict "legal business activities," framing the push as a way to safeguard "financial integrity, responsibility and transparency during the transition period."
The group emerged from supporters of large anti-government demonstrations that persisted for nearly two years ahead of the snap vote that ousted long-serving leader Aleksandar Vucic.
The banking angle and who holds the keys
In the days after the October 25 election, Serbia's central bank revoked Alta Bank AD's license after detecting unusual outflows from the bank. Alta Bank belongs to the closely held Alta Group, and most leading Serbian lenders have foreign owners, including subsidiaries of Intesa Sanpaolo Group, OTP Bank Plc, Raiffeisen Bank International, UniCredit S.p.A., and NLB Group.
Politics, probes, and what could move your money
The Student List has pledged to stamp out graft and review deals approved by the departing government, such as major infrastructure agreements. It still has not put forward a candidate for prime minister, and the complete handover awaits the election commission's formal verification of the result.
