The deal and who is buying
A group led by Blackstone agreed to take a 49.9% interest in the portion of LNG Canada's liquefaction business held by a Mitsubishi subsidiary, valuing the stake at $3.1 billion. Mitsubishi, a major LNG supplier in Japan, keeps control of that business and retains all of its contracted LNG volumes.
Blackstone is funding the equity from its credit and insurance unit, which the nearly $1.4 trillion manager classifies as corporate solutions. As Managing Director Zachary Rubenstein put it, "This announcement builds on our deep conviction in Canada, our partnership with the country's leading institutional investors and our ability to provide large corporates with flexible solutions to unlock value from their most critical assets."
Where the project stands
LNG Canada is the country's lone large scale LNG export terminal. Shell Plc owns 40% of the project and Mitsubishi holds 15%. In September, a Shell led investor group approved plans to double nameplate capacity to 28 million metric tons per year, and partners have been exploring partial stake sales to help fund that expansion.
Global buyers have also been looking beyond the Middle East for supply as energy transport through the Strait of Hormuz has been constrained since the Iran War.

Blackstone's Canada playbook
power plants in partnership with Apollo Global Management Inc. and KKR & Co.; and last year it supported Rogers Communications Inc.'s wireless network infrastructure through a C$7 billion transaction.
Why this matters for investors
In plain English: long lived energy infrastructure is attracting big balance sheets, and LNG Canada's expansion could create more opportunities for stake sales as financing needs rise. A Blackstone led group stepping in at this stage signals appetite to recycle capital into scale projects with contracted cash flows.
