Nordnet heads to Germany as Berlin aims to put more pensions into markets

Published Nov 2, 2026
Share:
Summary:
  • Nordnet AB will begin rolling out its platform in Germany on Nov. 16, with pension savings accounts slated for January.
  • Based in Stockholm, the firm looks after €130 billion ($146 billion) on behalf of 2.6 million clients, and its operations now reach beyond a simple digital brokerage.
  • With the pay-as-you-go model under pressure from an aging population, Chancellor Friedrich Merz's coalition is seeking a broad revamp of the retirement system and a greater flow of contributions into financial markets.

What Nordnet announced

Speaking in Frankfurt on Monday, Chief Executive Officer Rasmus Järborg said Nordnet will start introducing its products in Europe's biggest economy on Nov. 16. "We're very happy with everything happening in Germany right now," he said. "The market is changing rapidly and we want to be here."

Nordnet plans to offer pension savings accounts in January as part of the rollout.

Why Germany now

With the pay-as-you-go model under pressure from an aging population, Chancellor Friedrich Merz's coalition is seeking a broad revamp of the retirement system and a greater flow of contributions into financial markets. The planned pivot is expected to reshape the country's risk-averse saving habits and boost domestic financial markets.

Market footprint and targets

Stockholm-based Nordnet manages roughly €130 billion ($146 billion) serving 2.6 million customers, and its scope has grown beyond traditional brokerage. Following Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland, Germany will become its fifth market.

According to the company, Germany's savings pool is over twice the combined size of the Nordic markets. It is targeting profitability in Germany from 2029 onward.

As more long term savers enter markets, smart tools can sharpen your perspective. We're hosting our first ever investor livestream on 11/17 to show you how to use ChatGPT and Claude to invest like a pro, hosted by Briefs Finance CEO Jaspreet Singh. Save your seat.

What this could mean for your portfolio

If Germany's planned pension overhaul channels more household cash into funds and equities, platforms ready to serve that demand could see a bigger opportunity set. Watch Nordnet's January pension launch, early customer adoption, and whether the 2029 profitability goal holds as policy and uptake take shape.
