What happened
Germany's biggest industrial union, IG Metall, is ramping up stoppages nationwide, with walkouts at Volkswagen's Audi unit, Mercedes-Benz Group and supplier Schaeffler early in the week after the no-strike period lapsed at October's close. A third bargaining round is slated to begin Thursday, according to IG Metall.
Tensions are highest at Audi's Ingolstadt base, where employees coping with pricier energy and fuel joined a short action last night. Unions are pressing for long-term assurances for German locations.
The pay and jobs fight
IG Metall wants a 5% wage bump over 12 months and concrete protections for employment and production sites. Employers countered with a one-off 2027 payment equal to 1% of annual gross pay alongside a 1.3% wage hike taking effect in July 2028.
Management representatives cautioned that deeper headcount cuts will be hard to avoid unless Germany brings down hourly labor costs in a meaningful way.

Industry strains and what it means for your portfolio
The talks land as carmakers try to trim costs amid soft demand in China and fiercer competition at home. Suppliers are under pressure too. Schaeffler said Tuesday it plans to shut five European sites and cut 3,460 jobs, with about three quarters of those reductions in Germany.
In plain English: rising labor tension and restructuring can translate into choppier earnings paths for Germany's auto makers and their suppliers. Keep an eye on bargaining outcomes and any follow-on production disruptions - both are near term swing factors for valuations tied to the country's car sector.
