Sitharaman urges Tata to settle leadership rift quietly and quickly

Published Nov 2, 2026
Share:
Summary:
  • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman called for an amicable resolution to Tata Group's internal leadership fight.
  • The tussle pits Tata Sons against Tata Trusts, the top shareholder, and centers on whether Natarajan Chandrasekaran returns as Tata Sons chairman.
  • She said the issue is delicate, vital to the Indian economy, and should not play out in public.

What the minister said

Speaking in Mumbai on Monday, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman called the standoff "very delicate," urging that it be handled with business savvy and a spirit of cooperation among all sides. She cited Tata's global reputation and its importance to the Indian economy as reasons a quick settlement matters.

She urged both sides to keep the dispute out of the spotlight, saying, "So they talk it out, make sure it comes back quickly to some normalcy" and "You cannot be spinning out like this in public." She added, "It is a very critical component to Indian economy, and therefore it has to be amicably settled among themselves."

What is at stake

The $185 billion conglomerate has been drawn into a leadership tug-of-war involving Tata Sons and Tata Trusts, its largest shareholder. Central to the dispute are Natarajan Chandrasekaran's potential reappointment as chairman of Tata Sons, broader governance issues, and the question of listing the holding company on the stock market.

Politics enters the frame

The clash has spilled into politics. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi alleged that the government had permitted the group to be "criminally destroyed." Sitharaman responded by accusing him of politicizing what she described as a commercial and legal dispute.
