What the forecast shows
Thailand's Energy Policy and Planning Office expects electricity consumption to climb 5.3% in 2026. That would be the strongest annual increase in nine years, lining up with projections that demand growth is running at its fastest since at least 2018. Broader energy use is also projected to rise, supported by shipments of electronics, government-led investment, and household spending.
Who is using the power
The first half of the year saw a 6% uptick in domestic energy use. Industry led the pack and made up more than 40% of nationwide demand. Within manufacturing, electronics producers were among the top contributors to the increase, with automakers next in line. Energy use also picked up across service businesses, including retailers, hotels and other tourism-linked operators.
Why it matters for your portfolio
Thailand is riding the global AI buildout. Local manufacturers are stepping up output of components used in computing and data-center infrastructure, and the International Monetary Fund has tagged the country as one of the Asian economies benefiting from this tech cycle through electronics exports. At the same time, a wave of new data-center projects is set to lift future electricity demand.

With the government temporarily halting dozens of those projects to set rules on power and water use, the near-term question is how quickly the grid can keep up. For anyone watching supply chains, tourism and tech, the country's power puzzle could be a tell on where growth - and costs - land next.
