BYD more than doubles Brazil share as local assembly scales up

Published Nov 3, 2026
Share:
Summary:
  • BYD lifted its Brazil market share to 9.7% in October from 4.2% a year earlier, according to figures shared with Bloomberg News on Tuesday.
  • Over the 12 months through October, registrations reached 193,227 vehicles, more than 120% above the same period in 2025; October alone hit 24,114 registrations, up 137.6% year over year.
  • At the Camaçari, Bahia complex - where SKD imports from China are assembled - the output has surpassed 150,000 vehicles, the operation supports 9,500 jobs, the site is close to completion with trials ongoing for newly installed paint and welding lines, and work on the stamping plant has progressed significantly to support localized production.

Rapid gains and rising share

About a year into its local assembly push, BYD has more than doubled its foothold in Latin America's biggest car market. The company said its share reached 9.7% last month, up from 4.2% a year earlier, as it expands in a country it considers pivotal to global growth.

Registrations tell the same story. For the year through October, BYD logged 193,227 vehicles in Brazil, more than 120% higher than the comparable stretch in 2025. October alone saw 24,114 registrations, a 137.6% jump from a year before.

Camaçari build-out

BYD's industrial hub in Camaçari, in Bahia state, is central to that expansion, assembling semi knocked down vehicles shipped from China. The site has turned out more than 150,000 units and is tied to 9,500 jobs.

The site is nearing the finish line, with commissioning tests underway on the new paint and welding shops. Work on the stamping plant has moved into late stages and, when finished, will complete the set of capabilities required for full local manufacturing.

Smart investors look for new tools that quietly improve their decision making. We're hosting our first ever investor livestream on 11/17 to show you how to use ChatGPT and Claude to invest like a pro, hosted by Briefs Finance CEO Jaspreet Singh. Save your seat.

Strategy and outlook

BYD frames Brazil as a strategic pillar for its worldwide ambitions. "We want to lead the Brazilian automotive market by 2030, and the results show that we have everything it takes to get there," said BYD Senior Vice-President Alexandre Baldy.

Why it matters for your portfolio

Market share nearing double digits, rapid volume growth, and a plant moving toward fuller localization all point to BYD tightening its grip on a high-growth market. In plain English: more scale in Brazil can lower unit costs and deepen distribution, which tends to support margins and resiliency through cycles. The bottom line: watch how quickly the stamping plant comes online and whether monthly registrations sustain triple digit growth - both are real markers for earnings power ahead.

Learning how emerging tools can sharpen judgment helps investors stay prepared. On 11/17, our CEO Jaspreet Singh goes live for our first ever investor livestream on how to use ChatGPT and Claude to invest like a pro. Register to join him.
