Summary:
  • Jeff Bezos will serve as co-CEO of Project Prometheus, a new AI startup focusing on engineering and manufacturing for computers, automobiles, and spacecraft
  • The company raised $6.2 billion partly from Bezos, making it one of the most well-financed early-stage startups globally
  • This is Bezos' first formal operational role since stepping down as Amazon CEO in July 2021, and the startup has already hired nearly 100 employees from OpenAI, DeepMind, and Meta

The Return

Jeff Bezos is taking an operational role for the first time since leaving Amazon. The billionaire will serve as co-CEO of Project Prometheus, a new AI startup focused on engineering and manufacturing applications.

The company targets AI for computers, automobiles, and spacecraft - dovetailing with Bezos' space interests through Blue Origin.

This marks Bezos' first formal operational position since stepping down as Amazon CEO in July 2021. While deeply involved in Blue Origin, his official title there is simply founder.

The Funding

Project Prometheus raised $6.2 billion, partly from Bezos himself. That makes it one of the most well-financed early-stage startups in the world.

The company has already hired nearly 100 employees, including researchers from top AI firms like OpenAI, DeepMind, and Meta, according to the New York Times.

The Co-Founder

Bezos' co-CEO is Vik Bajaj, a physicist and chemist who worked closely with Google co-founder Sergey Brin at Google X, often called "The Moonshot Factory."

Google X produced ambitious projects including Wing (drone delivery service) and the self-driving car that became Waymo.

In 2015, Bajaj helped found Verily, a life sciences research lab operated by Google parent Alphabet. Three years later, he co-founded Foresite Labs to incubate AI and data science startups. He recently left that role to focus on Project Prometheus.

The Crowded Market

Bezos is entering an increasingly competitive AI landscape. Smaller companies are trying to carve out niches while racing against industry giants like Google, Meta, and Microsoft, plus pioneering firms like OpenAI and Anthropic.

The company has kept a low profile so far. It's unclear when Project Prometheus started or where it will be based.

The Low Profile Era

Since leaving Amazon, Bezos received as much attention for his personal life as his businesses, including an extravagant celebrity-filled Venice wedding earlier this year.

He's become more involved in Blue Origin and shown increasing interest in the AI race. Project Prometheus firmly plants him in the middle of that competition.

The Bottom Line

Jeff Bezos is jumping back into operations as co-CEO of a $6.2 billion AI startup focused on engineering and manufacturing, marking his return to a hands-on role three years after leaving Amazon. With nearly 100 employees already hired from top AI firms and co-founder Vik Bajaj bringing Google X pedigree, Project Prometheus enters a crowded AI market backed by Bezos' wealth and credibility.
