A Full Exit From China by 2027
Google is reportedly telling suppliers to get ready for a major change: every Pixel phone, watch, and earbud will stop being made in China. The shift begins in 2027, with Vietnam and India taking over production, according to a Nikkei Asia report from the past week.
Samsung already moved its phone production out of China, and Google is following the same route.
The decision did not come out of nowhere. A Nikkei Asia report from January said the Pixel 11 would be made only in Vietnam.
That meant Google had to spend on testing and tooling equipment (the machines that shape parts) for the factory there. The trial run worked, and it encouraged Google to bring other Pixel products to Vietnam as well.
Google is moving more than a single factory or product line. It is moving an entire hardware lineup, and suppliers have years of notice to build out new operations in Vietnam and India.
Why Google Can Move Faster Than Apple
The report says this move is simpler for Google than it would be for Apple. Google does not sell Pixel devices directly in China, and the Pixel has a small user base there.

Google is not leaving a huge pool of customers behind, which is why the same move would be a much bigger lift for Apple.
More Phones, More Gemini
The planned increase is tied directly to Google's push to drive adoption of its Gemini AI tools.
In plain terms, Google wants more phones in more hands because every Pixel is a chance to make its AI tools part of someone's daily routine.
The supply chain for those extra phones is getting a refresh too. Memory chips are in short supply, so Google is pooling its purchases of phone memory chips with the chips it buys for its AI and cloud operations.
One combined order gives the company stronger negotiating power and possibly better pricing.
What This Means for Your Portfolio
Google is not the first big tech company to make this trip. Samsung finished moving its smartphone production out of China in 2019, after a process that took more than a year, sending most production to Vietnam and India. Most of that production went to Vietnam and India, the same two countries Google is picking now.
Google's version has a different aim.
For investors, this is a quieter story than a tariff headline, but it matters because Google is reshaping its supply chain while it weaves AI more deeply into its hardware. If the Gemini bet pays off, the Pixel becomes less of a side project and more of a front door to Google's AI business.
That is the kind of thing that shows up in earnings over time, not in a single quarter.
For most people, the shift will be invisible. Google is betting that the next big thing in tech starts with the phone in your pocket, and this factory move is part of that bet.
