Unitree's Superman Robot Claims It Can Outrun Usain Bolt

Summary:
  • Unitree says its Superman robot can run at 12.66 meters per second, a pace that would cover 100 meters in 7.90 seconds.
  • The speed and jumping claims have not been independently verified; Business Insider could not confirm them.
  • Unitree plans to list in Shanghai at a $9 billion valuation, with retail demand more than 5,000 times oversubscribed.

Built to Break Records

On Monday, Unitree, a Chinese robotics firm, introduced a robot that it says can run faster than the fastest human ever recorded - if you trust the company making it. The robot is called Superman.

The company reports the machine can move at 12.66 meters per second at its fastest, surpassing the roughly 12.4 m/s Bolt reached during his 2009 world-record 100-meter race. The company also says the robot can jump two meters, which would top the human standing high-jump world record. Unitree says it built the robot in just three months. That fast development is part of the pitch.

Before anyone gets too carried away, the speed claims have not been independently verified. Business Insider could not confirm them. The company is the only source of these numbers.

The Shanghai Listing

The timing is easier to confirm. The reveal lands two days before Unitree's planned stock market debut in Shanghai.

The company is not just showing off a robot; it is about to sell shares to the public. Unitree plans to list on Wednesday at a $9 billion valuation. The company's listing is a notable step for China's fast-growing robotics industry.

Retail demand was enormous. The portion of the offering set aside for retail buyers was more than 5,000 times oversubscribed.

Unitree already has a track record. Another Unitree humanoid, the H1, ran in a half-marathon in Beijing earlier this year. That was a real event with a real robot.

The company says it built the Superman robot in just three months, and that speed of development is part of its pitch. What remains unproven is whether the robot can match those numbers outside Unitree's own tests.

China's Robotics Push

Unitree sits at the center of China's broader robotics ambitions, a sector the government has made a strategic priority. The H1's half-marathon finish in Beijing was widely covered and demonstrated the company's ability to deliver working robots in real-world settings. But the Superman's claims represent a different level of performance entirely.

If verified, the robot would not only outrun Bolt but also leap higher than any human standing jump on record. Those are extraordinary claims, and the robotics industry will be watching closely to see whether Unitree can back them up with independent testing.

What It Means for Investors

Why should a robot that the company says could outrun a sprinter matter to your portfolio? Real money is already attaching to that idea.

Unitree's listing is already drawing intense attention from retail investors, with demand for the retail portion of the offering more than 5,000 times oversubscribed. No one can say whether the robots will live up to the hype. But the attention is real, and that is how a new technology starts to affect real money.
