Amodei Says AI Backlash Rooted in Trust Crisis, Not His Warnings

Summary:
  • Investor Gavin Baker accused Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei of fueling anti-AI sentiment with his warnings about risks, especially around data centers.
  • Amodei disagreed, stating his essays give equal weight to risks and benefits, and the real issue is a widespread trust deficit.
  • He added that the fairest critique of AI firms is their failure to deliver on promised large-scale benefits.

Who's to Blame for the AI Backlash

Dario Amodei keeps hearing the same complaint: his warnings about AI have scared people into turning against it. He says the critics have the story backwards.

Investor Gavin Baker made that argument on August 15, 2026, during the All-In podcast and in an X post. He said Amodei's risk warnings helped turn U.S. opinion against AI, and against the data centers that power it.

Baker was one of several voices claiming that AI skepticism and government crackdowns started because AI leaders spent so much time warning about dangers. He also said Amodei had failed to win the argument on AI regulation.

"I respectfully think he should make an effort to be a more positive advocate for his own industry," Baker said.

Amodei, who runs Anthropic, was not about to leave that unanswered. By 9:53 AM PDT on August 16, 2026, his response was public.

"I do not agree that my messaging has been disproportionately negative," he said.

He pointed out that he has written one major essay about risks and one about benefits.

Amodei Says the Real Problem Is Trust

Amodei does not dismiss all the criticism. He agreed that AI's public standing is negative and called that a serious issue.

Where he disagrees is on the cause. "I think it is fundamentally a crisis of trust," he said.

If the AI backlash has you doubting big promises, the free Always Be Buying eBook shows a steadier path to wealth.

In his view, ordinary people have lost faith in corporations, governments, and the tech sector. That suspicion built up over decades, and the AI backlash is just its newest form.

Amodei also thinks many critics are aiming at the wrong target. The sharpest critique aimed at AI firms, Anthropic included, is that they have yet to fulfill their grand promises of global benefit.

That, he said, is on the industry. It is a much more useful critique than complaining about messaging and marketing.

On inspiration, he is blunt. Saying AI will cure every disease globally is a cliché, not a vision that moves people.

What would actually change minds is something concrete, like curing cancer.

The Regulation Fight

Amodei also rejected the forced choice between spreading AI everywhere with no oversight and giving a few companies concentrated control through regulation.

He said the Silicon Valley belief that regulation always ends up serving the biggest companies is too simple.

"I know that there's a sort of Silicon Valley shorthand where regulation equals regulatory capture equals concentration of power, but I've always found this to be an overly simplistic picture of the world," he said.

Many people outside tech see regulation as a way to limit corporate power and help regular people, he noted. That is why Anthropic chooses its policy ideas carefully.

Amodei says AI naturally pushes power to the center, so Anthropic favors proposals that slow down the biggest labs while helping smaller competitors.

Open-weights models, which make the underlying code public, help only somewhat. As Amodei put it, they simply move the concentration to whoever has the most compute and chips.

He wants "rules of the road" that tackle cyber risks, biological risks, and the chance that AI systems act in ways people didn't intend. The rules would hold back leading labs while still allowing open-weights models, with their risks managed.

What This Means for Your Money

This fight is not just CEO drama. Trust is a real factor in how quickly people adopt AI tools, and adoption is what turns hype into revenue.

If the public stays suspicious of AI companies, regulators will feel pressure to crack down. That is a risk for stocks tied to the AI boom.

This is not only Anthropic's problem. Trust has been a recurring issue for OpenAI CEO Sam Altman too.

The hopeful side is that the fix is concrete. The companies that can show real benefits, the ones that make the cliché feel true, are the ones most likely to rebuild trust.

For anyone watching their portfolio, the shift that matters is results, not promises.

Amid the crisis of trust in tech, the free Always Be Buying eBook teaches you to build wealth steadily.
