Fundraising Details
Emulate is discussing a $700 million seed raise, per people with knowledge of the talks who requested anonymity as the details are not public. The startup is aiming for a $3 billion valuation before new money. Index Ventures and Lightspeed Venture Partners are expected to anchor the round, with Creandum participating, one person said. The Financial Times first flagged the ongoing negotiations. Representatives for Emulate, Lightspeed and Index did not immediately respond to inquiries, and Creandum declined to comment.
Team and Technology
Founded by Jack Parker-Holder, Matthew McGill and Philip Ball, all alumni of DeepMind's world‑model team, Emulate concentrates on building systems that model physical processes and anticipate their behavior. World models are emerging as a fresh frontier in AI, seen as less crowded than the large language model arena behind tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini and Anthropic's Claude.

Context And What It Means For Your Portfolio
Investor money is flowing to startups built by veteran researchers. Another DeepMind alum, David Silver, raised about $1 billion in April for Ineffable Intelligence at a $5 billion valuation. AMI Labs, co‑founded by former Meta chief scientist Yann LeCun, secured a little more than $1 billion in March. If more capital shifts toward world models over classic chatbots, expect competition to broaden and valuations to keep stretching, especially for teams with top‑tier research pedigrees.
