What changed
Chancellor John Healey set the tax on slot machines at 25%, up from 20%, and below the 40% pace some in the industry had braced for. The duty applies to higher-stakes machines, which means pubs and seaside arcades are not in scope.
Market reaction
Traders cheered the smaller-than-feared hike. Shares in Ladbrokes owner Entain were up as high as 7.6%, while Rank Group advanced more than 10%, and William Hill parent Evoke added 4.8%.
Policy backdrop
In a bid to revive struggling high streets hollowed out by rising costs and shifting shopping habits - where many independents have been replaced by betting and vape shops - Labour is focusing specifically on gambling. Regarding business rates - the levy on commercial property - relief will not extend to adult gaming centers or vape shops.

What it means for your portfolio
JPMorgan analyst Estelle Weingrod said operators can likely blunt much of the tax hit, most commonly by shutting loss-making betting shops. The sector has warned about the pressure from higher taxes, and some firms, including Entain, have already cut jobs. The bottom line: a lighter-than-feared duty, targeted so pubs and arcades avoid it, plus selective rate relief on the high street, sets a mixed but manageable backdrop for UK gambling names.
