What changed in bond trading
Trading is spreading beyond a company's handful of go-to bonds, a pattern Todorova says is showing up on both sides of the Atlantic. In Europe, credit markets saw a drop of roughly the same size over roughly a three-and-a-half-year span, mirroring the US shift.
Which parts of the market moved
Most of the dispersion is happening in investment-grade credit, according to the note, whereas high-yield volumes are still packed into fewer securities. Large tech issuers described as hyperscalers also tend to see activity concentrate in just a small number of their bonds.
Why investors notice
When more of an issuer's bonds are active, investors can target specific maturities more precisely, and the extra charge for less-liquid paper may ease. As Todorova put it, "As trading activity extends beyond benchmark issues, the valuation gap between on- and off-the-run bonds may narrow, creating a more efficient and liquid issuer ecosystem."

How persistent the change looks
Within investment-grade issuers, the single most traded bond has a greater than two thirds chance of still ranking among that issuer's top three by activity a month later. Three months out, the likelihood drops to 55%.
