The deal and timing
U.S. Bancorp is lining up a loonie bond offering that could reach C$1 billion, or roughly $713 million. People familiar with the matter said the sale could launch as early as next week, would aim for no less than C$750 million, and is expected to come in five, seven or 10 year maturities. The people asked not to be named because they are not authorized to speak publicly.
Investor outreach
The bank started a pre-recorded presentation for debt investors on Monday, and later this week its executives plan to hold meetings with money managers in Toronto. Bloomberg previously detailed the briefing and the Toronto meetings. A U.S. Bancorp representative declined to comment.
Why it matters for the market
This would be U.S. Bancorp's first Canadian dollar issue since 2005, when it sold C$450 million and later redeemed it five years on. A fresh deal would slot into a record year for maple bonds, with around C$51 billion sold so far, more than double the previous annual high, based on Bloomberg data.

What it means for your portfolio
If the sale comes next week, watch how demand lines up against the at-least C$750 million target and which tenor the bank chooses, since both will steer pricing and relative value versus U.S. dollar debt. The backdrop is supportive, as record maple issuance signals receptive domestic demand for high grade foreign names.
