What changed
American Airlines is bumping the yearly cost on two of its co-branded cards. The Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard climbs to $150 from $99, marking its first increase since 2018, when it went from $95 to $99, according to a spokeswoman. American is setting the annual charge on the Citi AAdvantage Business Mastercard at $150 as well.
Why the move matters
Airlines and their banking partners have been nudging card fees higher, and American's Tuesday announcement slots into that trend. The cards are highly lucrative, generating billions of dollars for carriers because banks buy miles and pass them to cardholders. Competitors have been moving too: last year American Express raised the Platinum card - which includes airport lounge access - to $895 from $695, while JPMorgan Chase increased the Sapphire Reserve's price from $550 to $795.
New perks and timing
To help offset the higher sticker price, American is adding benefits. Cardholders will earn triple AAdvantage miles on hotel stays reserved through American's booking portal. Cardholders are eligible for as much as $120 in fee credits every four years toward Global Entry or TSA PreCheck, plus a $100 statement credit each year for in-flight buys like food. The higher fees begin Jan. 24.

Investor takeaway
Higher fees paired with richer earn rates and credits point to the same playbook across travel cards: protect economics while keeping frequent flyers engaged. For your portfolio, it reinforces two themes in payments and airlines revenue - loyalty programs that sell miles to banks remain a cash engine, and premium card fees are still finding room to rise.
