What was disclosed
The nearly 6-year-old AI lab filed its S-1 with the SEC on Monday, reporting $112.4 billion in cash and $19.3 billion in short-term investments on June 30, for a total of $131.7 billion. By CNBC and S&P Capital IQ's comparison, that sum is higher than every U.S. non-bank except Berkshire Hathaway and Alphabet, and as of midyear it exceeded the cash of Amazon, SpaceX, Meta, and Microsoft, with a total larger than Nvidia and Apple put together.
No company has headed into an IPO with anything close to this cash balance. Anthropic has not yet detailed the size of the offering, and the filing said existing investors will sell shares alongside the company, so Anthropic will not receive all proceeds from the deal. More specifics are expected in about two weeks.
The IPO could supercharge the pile
How big could the balance get? Reports indicate the IPO could raise more than $100 billion, which would lift Anthropic's cash above $230 billion if achieved.
The bill for compute is coming due
Anthropic has raised an aggregate $141 billion in private financing in roughly six years, which helps explain the stockpile. Still, compute costs are building: first-half compute and infrastructure expenses were $8.95 billion. The company typically locks in computing capacity 12 to 18 months ahead and only recognizes the expense when that capacity comes online, so the first-half figure does not reflect the full weight of what is already contracted.
As of June 30, Anthropic reported estimated undiscounted lease obligations of $321.4 billion, along with $265.6 billion in fixed or minimum-guaranteed commitments it expects in the future; these are slated to kick in over the next few years and run anywhere from one year up to 20 years. The company has not yet provided one combined total for its current commitments. Given these future computing obligations, Anthropic said it will need to keep adding cash through additional fundraising or by generating profits to meet them.

Why it matters for your portfolio
In plain English: the cash is enormous, and the commitments are larger still, with expense recognition rising as capacity turns on. The balance sheet looks exceptionally liquid today, but cash flow will be shaped by those obligations over the coming years, with IPO proceeds a major swing factor for how much cushion Anthropic carries.
