What's new
Halliburton, the world's largest provider of fracking services, said Monday it has two fresh agreements aimed at boosting energy activity in Venezuela. One is with Eneva SA to look for prospects in natural gas. The other, a memorandum of understanding with West-Construcciones CA, or WESCA, focuses on helping design and plan field development. Both arrangements are non-binding, but they signal where the company wants to lean next.
Who is involved
Eneva brings scale as Brazil's biggest privately run natural gas operator, giving Halliburton a partner with deep regional expertise. WESCA, an engineering firm, is set to collaborate on the nuts and bolts of getting fields designed and ready. Together, the pair expands Halliburton's on-the-ground relationships inside Venezuela.
The backdrop
The deals add to Halliburton's presence in Venezuela at a time when US firms are looking to line up fresh oil arrangements there. The Houston-based company shut down its primary operations in the country in 2020 as US sanctions tightened on Venezuela's socialist leadership. More recently, President Donald Trump has sought to help bring US oil and gas companies back, urging Venezuelan officials in February to stop an auction of Halliburton's seized assets.
