Ship Strike And Escalating Naval Moves
A commercial vessel was hit late Saturday while crossing the Strait of Hormuz, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Centre said, noting the strike involved an unidentified projectile. Flames erupted aboard the vessel, and nearby authorities helped evacuate the crew, according to UKMTO's post on X.
It is the latest in a run of back‑and‑forth incidents at sea in recent weeks. On Wednesday, U.S. Central Command reported it had destroyed 10 Iranian tankers the week prior. On Saturday, CENTCOM added that since it resumed a naval blockade of Iran, over the past 60 days its forces had rerouted 100 commercial vessels, and wrote on X, "ZERO ships have passed through the blockade without U.S. forces allowing."
Shipping through the chokepoint has been squeezed. Since Feb. 28 - the date the U.S. and Israel launched their war on Iran - flows of crude and other freight across the Strait have thinned to a mere trickle, leaving crews and vessels stuck for weeks or even months.
Talks Freeze, Regional Outreach, And Sharp Words
Fresh U.S.-Iran talks look distant. Ebrahim Azizi, who chairs Iran's parliamentary national security committee, posted on X, "No negotiations. Until Iran's terms are met, talks are futile." A senior Iranian official and a Gulf diplomat said representatives from Iran and Gulf states intend to convene in Muscat on Monday to finalize an agreement establishing an Iran‑Oman shipping corridor through the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian official also said there are no negotiations underway with the U.S.
Tehran has simultaneously courted neighbors even as it has spent months hitting them in retaliation for U.S. attacks. Speaking Friday at the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, President Masoud Pezeshkian said, "Iran has successfully stood against Israel and the U.S." and added, "Since we are seeking truth and justice, we will not yield in front of bullying arrogance."

On Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump said that, if not for U.S. military action, Iran would have eliminated Israel along with the Middle East and would have started attacking American cities, and he added, "If I had it to do again, I would do exactly what I did." On Saturday, during a trip to Ireland, he forecast that the war in Iran would probably end shortly after November's midterm elections and said that oil prices would drop sharply once that occurs.
Oil Prices Jump And Supply Routes Strain
Crude cooled Friday but still booked a strong week after vaulting back above $100 on Middle East turmoil. Brent futures closed 2.8% lower at $104.61 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate finished 2.4% lower at $100.05. On Thursday, Brent topped roughly $108 and WTI climbed above $104.
Early this week, prices stayed firm. ICE Brent Crude (Nov′26) last showed 106.89 at 3:08 AM BST, up +2.28 or +2.18% on delayed USD exchange data.
Saudi Arabia has been using its East‑West crude pipeline to bypass Hormuz, but the kingdom said Friday it shut the facility as a precaution after multiple drones launched from Iraq targeted the line Thursday morning in the Riyadh and Medina regions. The government said the attacks caused fires and some damage, and that several people were injured.
What It Means For Your Portfolio
A ship gets hit, a blockade is back on, a key Saudi bypass goes offline, and Washington and Tehran are not talking while Iran works a shipping pact with Gulf neighbors. That is a lot of pressure on the world's narrowest oil artery, and it shows up in prices with Brent near $105 and WTI around $100.
If traffic through Hormuz tightens further, if the Muscat agreement lands cleanly, or if rhetoric from Tehran, Washington, or Riyadh shifts, oil's tone can change fast. Keep an eye on flows, not just forecasts.
