What happened
Employers said the group representing roughly 250 security workers at the nation's two busiest ports agreed to another two-week extension, now running through Nov. 20. The Pacific Maritime Association said more bargaining sessions with the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 26 are scheduled during that window.
This follows a series of short extensions, first moving a Nov. 1 target to Nov. 4, then pushing again to midnight Friday. As the PMA put it, "PMA remains committed to reaching a fair agreement at the bargaining table that avoids disruption at the nation's two busiest ports."
Why the timing matters
That Friday cutoff lined up with the planned shutdown of the Vincent Thomas Bridge for more than a year of repairs. The PMA said disruptions at affected terminals could touch about 85% of the freight flowing through the Port of Long Beach and around one third of the loads at the Port of Los Angeles.
The neighboring ports reported record volumes last month and together handle roughly one third of the country's seaborne container traffic. Any labor hiccup layered onto a long bridge closure would test capacity at exactly the wrong moment.

What to watch next
The PMA - which represents marine terminals and shipping lines - and ILWU Local 26 have been holding frequent talks, aided by the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. After the union authorized a strike, tensions escalated; on Oct. 27, the PMA reported that ILWU dockworkers and marine clerks, despite having their own contracts and being outside this dispute, would likely join Local 26 watchmen on the line if a strike occurs.
ILWU Local 26 members provide security across six container terminals in the Southern California ports. Looking ahead on volumes, Port of Long Beach CEO Noel Hacegaba told Bloomberg, "We expect to be busy at least through the first month of the new year and possibly through the first quarter," noting that shipments tied to the AI buildout are among the demand drivers.
