Australia's Diesel Cover Slips To 31 Days As Government Flags Uncertainty

Published Nov 7, 2026
Share:
Summary:
  • Australia holds 31 days of diesel, down three from last week and back near levels from two weeks ago, with Murray Watt saying stocks are "within normal levels."
  • Jet fuel stands at 28 days, one lower week over week, while petrol is steady at a level equal to 41 days of use.
  • Watt said 48 fuel ships are heading to Australia, up five on the week, and 2.8 billion liters are slated to arrive in the next four weeks, including 1.5 billion liters of diesel.

What the numbers show

A government update put diesel cover at 31 days, three fewer than the prior week and roughly back to where it sat a fortnight ago. Murray Watt, who oversees the environment and water portfolio at the federal level, said current volumes fall "within normal levels." Jet fuel is at 28 days, one day lower than last week, and petrol is unchanged at an amount equal to 41 days of consumption.

Flows on the water

Watt said there are 48 fuel-carrying vessels currently headed to Australia, five more than a week earlier. He added that 2.8 billion liters are secured to land over the coming four weeks, of which 1.5 billion liters are diesel.

Oil backdrop and Canberra's message

Crude pulled back after the US midterm election results, according to Bloomberg. At the same time, emerging indications that negotiations between the US and Iran are advancing have prompted speculation that oil could ease from elevated levels, which could translate into cheaper fuel for consumers. Watt said, "Australia's fuel supplies remain strong, despite a lot of international uncertainty that continues," and added, "The international situation remains uncertain and that's why our government continues to engage with the rest of the world to make sure that Australia's fuel security remains strong." He also noted, "I'm not going to forecast exactly what the petrol and diesel prices will be in the next few weeks or few months, but I think all Australians would welcome any reduction in fuel prices."

Market shifts and supply signals can inform patient investors looking for smarter approaches. We're hosting our first ever investor livestream on 11/17 to show you how to use ChatGPT and Claude to invest like a pro, hosted by Briefs Finance CEO Jaspreet Singh. Save your seat.

Why it matters for investors

In plain English: near-term supply looks adequate, but global variables still steer pricing. If talks between Washington and Tehran keep nudging crude lower, refiners' margins could compress while transport and retail get some cost relief. Keep an eye on import flows and days of cover as real-time tells for demand, inventory tightness, and where fuel-sensitive sectors in your portfolio might head next.

Being aware of evolving tools and trends gives investors a practical edge. On 11/17, our CEO Jaspreet Singh goes live for our first ever investor livestream on how to use ChatGPT and Claude to invest like a pro. Register to join him.
