Blackstone teams up with Aon on new Lloyd's reinsurance syndicate, Cortina

Published Nov 6, 2026
Share:
Summary:
  • Blackstone Inc. and Aon Plc have created a Lloyd's of London syndicate called Cortina to supply capital for reinsurance deals.
  • Cortina will commit 3% to Aon-facilitated property portfolio protections above a catastrophe trigger and 5% to other eligible Aon reinsurance placements.
  • QBE will handle underwriting and oversight, with Cortina targeting a Jan. 1 start, pending final sign-off from Lloyd's.

How the Cortina syndicate is set up

Blackstone, the world's largest alternative asset manager, and broker Aon unveiled a Lloyd's syndicate named Cortina that will provide capital backing for reinsurance contracts arranged through Aon. QBE is slated to run the underwriting and governance.

The allocation is pre-set: 3% on Aon-brokered structures that protect insurers' property books once catastrophe claims pass an agreed threshold, and 5% on other qualifying reinsurance placements Aon puts together. Cortina is aiming to begin underwriting on Jan. 1, subject to final approval at Lloyd's.

Why big money is moving into P&C

Alternative managers have long hunted in life insurance, but are now leaning into property and casualty insurance too. One draw is diversification: insurance results often do not move in lockstep with broader markets. The basic model is also familiar - collect more in premiums than you pay in claims, then invest those premiums.

Aon reports that P&C insurers and reinsurers posted a 17% average return on equity in 2025 following multiple years of rate increases, even as global commercial insurance pricing has eased in recent quarters. A related data note in the piece highlights "Alternative Capital Backing Reinsurance Rises," sourced to the Gallagher Reinsurance Market Report.

Savvy investors often sharpen their edge by adopting smarter analytical tools. We're hosting our first ever investor livestream on 11/17 to show you how to use ChatGPT and Claude to invest like a pro, hosted by Briefs Finance CEO Jaspreet Singh. Save your seat.

The growing Lloyd's pipeline

This is not Blackstone's first Lloyd's exposure. It already supports a syndicate that assumes some of American International Group Inc.'s risk. And in 2025, Blackstone stated it will provide funding for a new Lloyd's syndicate that The Fidelis Partnership, the Bermuda-based underwriting firm, will run.

Others are crowding in as well. Last year, Allianz SE and Oaktree Capital Management established a reinsurance syndicate at Lloyd's, which remains the world's largest center for commercial and specialty risk. The article also includes a data reference titled "Lloyd's Members Funds by Investor Type," noting data as of Dec. 31, 2025 from Lloyd's.

What the leaders say - and what it means for your portfolio

Blackstone President and Chief Operating Officer Jon Gray said the partnership "will broaden the pools of capital available to the reinsurance market, expanding capacity and strengthening resilience across market cycles." Aon Chief Executive Officer Greg Case added, "As risks grow in scale and complexity, clients are looking for effective risk transfer solutions that consider all forms of available capital."

In plain English: more institutional capital is meeting still-elevated underwriting returns in P&C, even as headline commercial rates ease. For investors, that points to alternative managers seeking insurance cash flows that zig when public markets zag, while tapping the Lloyd's platform to scale.

Learning how new technologies like AI inform decision making can pay dividends. On 11/17, our CEO Jaspreet Singh goes live for our first ever investor livestream on how to use ChatGPT and Claude to invest like a pro. Register to join him.
