What happened
ON Semiconductor, a US chipmaker, has called off a planned expansion in the Czech Republic that carried a price tag of as much as $2 billion. The move, made together with the Czech Industry Ministry, would have expanded silicon carbide production at its existing facility in Roznov pod Radhostem.
Why the pivot
Management pointed to two shifts since the 2024 unveiling: the global market for silicon carbide has moved, and the math on the project no longer works the same. The plan envisioned a vertically integrated campus covering every step, starting with silicon carbide crystal growth and ending with completed power semiconductors.
What is unchanged
Current manufacturing in Roznov, covering both silicon and silicon carbide, is unaffected and remains part of ON's worldwide network. The company expects to keep investing and bringing on workers across its Czech sites, with anticipated demand coming from autos, industry, and data centers tied to AI.

Investor takeaway
In plain English: ON has canceled one large Czech build while keeping existing lines running and expecting to keep investing and hiring across its Czech locations. The signal for your portfolio is capacity discipline amid a changing silicon carbide backdrop, as AI-driven demand is expected to emerge in automotive, industrial, and data center use cases.
