Fund Plans Are Still an Idea
Ardian is evaluating a new buyout vehicle focused on Canada's mid and lower end of the market. The concept is early, but Co-Chief Executive Officer Mark Benedetti said he expects it could be up and running in less than two years. He added that discussions are underway with Canadian pension plans that are expected to act as anchor investors in the fund.
More Than Buyouts
"There's a real case to be made for the small- and medium-sized businesses in Canada and to invest directly in them," Benedetti said on Tuesday while attending the Canada Investment Summit. "There's lots that we can do there to find some Canadian champions, help them do more business with European entities and help them exist bigger on the world stage." He also said Ardian is talking with the pension plans about existing infrastructure projects, without sharing details.

Airports, energy transition and staffing
When questioned about putting money into Canada's four biggest airports, Benedetti said the firm would "definitely take a look," after Prime Minister Mark Carney recently opened them to private capital. He added Ardian's likely "next move" will be in energy transition. The company aims to grow its Canada team to 100 people within the next five years, up from 30, with most hires drawn from local talent.
