What the latest review advances
IMF staff agreed at the technical level to advance Argentina's third program review, leaving the final call to the IMF's executive board. If approved, the next disbursement would deliver $900 million to the Milei administration.
Most of the $20 billion arrangement has already gone out under prior reviews, so this tranche would add to funds largely disbursed already.
Market access moves to wait-and-see
Staff praised Milei's "prudent fiscal and monetary policies" and cited an improved central bank balance sheet. But long-term repayment still leans on Argentina reentering international capital markets, a move Milei has put off while seeking lower borrowing costs.
Right now, that door is mostly shut. Argentina's sovereign bonds yield above 12%, which effectively blocks a near-term return. In April, when yields were lower, staff repeatedly referenced achieving "timely and sustainable access to international capital markets" during the second review. This time, the IMF said "the authorities agreed to preserve readiness to access international capital markets when conditions permit and activate contingent credit lines as needed."

What to watch next
IMF staff said the government has implemented "the remaining agreed steps" before sending the review to the executive board, without detailing what those steps were.
The bottom line: the program is on track and discipline is earning praise, but new bond issuance likely waits on cheaper funding.
