Trump returns to Texas to boost Ken Paxton and sell an energy message

Published Oct 27, 2026
Share:
Summary:
  • President Donald Trump swung through Texas on Tuesday to campaign for Senate hopeful Ken Paxton in a tight contest that has Republicans anxious about Senate control.
  • Trump tied today's elevated fuel costs to the war in Iran, citing AAA's $4.27 national average for regular gas versus $2.98 before the war, and said pump prices would ease when the fighting ends.
  • According to a White House official, North American Blue Energy Partners Inc. delivered an initial one million barrels free to the U.S., and Washington is entitled to 35% of the company through a deal the Pentagon and the government unveiled in late August.

Why Trump went back to Texas

Trump made a last-ditch stop in a state that usually leans conservative to lift Paxton in a close Senate race that could tip the chamber. Democrats need to gain four seats to take control, and the Texas matchup has put a longtime Republican stronghold in play.

He has been crisscrossing the map to aid candidates in close contests, many of them in states he easily carried in the 2024 presidential race. But his low approval ratings have opened the door for Democrats in places that once looked out of reach, and Texas has not sent a Democrat to the Senate in decades. After Corpus Christi, he staged another rally in Lubbock before heading back to Washington.

Energy, front and center

Trump leaned hard on gasoline costs. He argued the conflict in Iran has helped push energy prices higher and asked voters to be patient, saying prices would come down when the war concludes, even with the war now eight months old and no clear off ramp. "Short-term pain, right, for long-term gain. You're going to see very soon," he told supporters in Corpus Christi.

AAA put the average price for regular at $4.27 a gallon, up from $2.98 before the war. The squeeze on family finances has turned into the race's top theme, creating headwinds for GOP hopefuls in conservative strongholds like Texas. Trump also defended attacking Iran as "one of the greatest things I ever did."

The Venezuelan tanker and the oil deal

Trump drew attention to a Venezuelan crude carrier docking at the Port of Corpus Christi to highlight new supply and, to underscore fresh supplies, Trump highlighted a Venezuelan crude tanker arriving at the Port of Corpus Christi and previously told reporters he planned to go aboard the vessel. A White House official said the shipment came from North American Blue Energy Partners Inc., and that the company provided the first one million barrels to the U.S. at no cost as an act of good faith. A deal revealed in late August with the Pentagon grants the U.S. government a 35% ownership interest in the company.

Those barrels are bound for Texas refineries, including a Citgo facility in Corpus Christi and an ExxonMobil plant in Baytown, the official said. A person familiar with the terms said the oil came from the Orinoco oil belt and cost about $30 a barrel to produce, including the added diluent needed to move the heavy grade. Brent crude, the global benchmark, ended regular trading Tuesday just under $114 a barrel.

The Trump administration has also touted that it now directs Venezuela's natural resources following the capture of former leader Nicolás Maduro. From the rally stage, Trump promised, "It'll be refined right here in Texas, including right here in Corpus Christi," and added that gasoline and diesel prices would fall "very quickly."

Politics, personality, and what it means for your portfolio

Trump cast Democrat James Talarico as too liberal for Texas and repeated personal jabs, asserting that Talarico is a vegan, is against gun rights, and backs transgender individuals. Trump," he said. "And I need the help of Ken Paxton."

Paxton carries controversies that have strained ties with fellow Republicans.

For investors, the thread is straightforward: a no cost crude tranche, a U.S. claim on a slice of a supplier, refinery runs in Texas, and public vows to tame pump prices. Watch how these supply moves and war related price signals flow into refining margins, crack spreads - the difference between crude costs and fuel prices - and energy equities before you reshuffle your exposure.

Following policy and energy themes, thoughtful investors look for new ways to gain insight. On 11/17, our CEO Jaspreet Singh goes live for our first ever investor livestream on how to use ChatGPT and Claude to invest like a pro. Register to join him.

Are We in a Recession? 5 Threats to the Economy and Where the Money Is Moving
  • The S&P 500 is up about 13% this year, but without AI it's in a bear market, with nearly 40% of its companies down more than 20% for four months or longer.
  • Jackson, Briefs Finance's head of investing research, sees five threats: rising interest rates, sticky inflation, an economy propped up by AI, a struggling UK, and high oil prices.
  • The opportunities he's watching mostly sit outside the dollar: rising economies like Brazil and Indonesia, US-backed emerging market bonds paying 7% to 9%, and the shifts that fear creates.

Common Investing Mistakes: Why a Stock Grade Is One Tool, Not the Whole Toolkit
  • The Briefs Score shows growth, income, and wealth preservation investors how well a stock fits their goal, with a separate letter grade for each one.
  • The most common mistake is treating the letter as an instruction. An A tells you a stock scores well for one goal, not that you should buy today.
  • Research works best as one input in a process you own. The grade shows how a stock stacks up. You supply the goal, the timeline, and the rules for being wrong.

How to Tell an Asset From a Liability: The One Question to Ask Before You Buy Anything
  • The typical American household earned more in 2025 than in any year on record, yet only 30% of Americans say they could pay a surprise $1,000 bill from savings, so the problem isn't income but what the income gets spent on.
  • An asset puts money in your pocket and a liability takes money out, and the wealthy buy assets first, then let the assets pay for the fun stuff.
  • Before you buy anything, ask one question: does this put money in my pocket, or take money out of my pocket? Then you need a plan for the money you keep.

How to Build Your First $2,000 Emergency Fund and Wipe Out Every Debt Over 10%

  • More than a third of American adults couldn't cover a $400 surprise bill with cash or savings, according to the Federal Reserve, and that's how one bad day turns into years of credit card payments.
  • Once the $2,000 is there, attack every debt charging more than 10% interest, highest rate first, because you can't out-invest a 22% credit card so paying it off is the investment.
