The decision and why the bank held steady
Chile's central bank left borrowing costs at 4.5% on Tuesday, with all board members backing the move. That makes seven straight meetings on hold under Governor Rosanna Costa.
Officials said inflation risks have risen as tensions in the Middle East and a strong El Niño drive up worldwide food prices, piling on extra pressure from energy, transportation and fertilizer costs tied to ongoing military conflicts. They wrote that fuel has done much of the recent lifting on prices and that, in line with those cost pressures, market-based measures of near-term inflation have climbed significantly. With "higher-than-usual uncertainty," the board reiterated it will decide policy one meeting at a time and will be especially alert to signs that these shocks feed through to broader and more persistent inflation.
The wider economic picture the bank sees
Growth has stalled this year, weighed down by extreme weather, elevated joblessness, and a sharp drop in mining output. The peso slid to an 18 month trough this week, while fuel bills are squeezing households, with diesel near a record in Santiago.
Chile's economy is highly open and imports nearly all its fuels, leaving it vulnerable to price pressures stemming from rising worldwide borrowing costs and the Iran war. Annual inflation was 4.1% in September, above the 3% target, and traders are wagering it will stay above that goal over the next two years. Last week, the state-run refiner Enap unveiled a fifth straight increase in fuel prices, raising diesel by 6.7% and lifting both 93- and 97-octane gasoline nearly 3%. Even as global activity remains resilient, the bank noted international financing conditions have tightened amid expectations of firmer monetary policy abroad.

High frequency reads for the third quarter point to weak consumption and, particularly, soft investment. Although officials anticipate the domestic economy will pick up momentum by 2027, policymakers cautioned that today's weakness could prove more persistent than anticipated.
How commentators reacted and what the forecasts say
"The balance of risks is changing," said Sebastián Díaz at Pacifico Research. "Now there's more hawkishness. You see greater concern about inflation." Jorge Selaive, Scotiabank Chile's chief economist, wrote on X that he expects a quarter-point hike in December. Offering a different view, Pantheon Macroeconomics' chief Latin America economist, Andrés Abadia, wrote that "Weak domestic demand argues against immediate tightening," and he still sees the rate held at 4.5% in December, though he said rising inflation expectations and stickier underlying pressures tilt the odds toward tighter policy.
The government is trying to revive activity. Last month it outlined a short term package of 1.3 trillion pesos (1.3 billion dollars) for investment, public works and employment subsidies, which it says will create about 100,000 jobs. Lawmakers have also approved President José Antonio Kast's wide-ranging economic package that features corporate tax cuts and guarantees to support investment for large projects. Economists polled by the monetary authority this month expect gross domestic product to edge up only 0.2% this year and then grow 3% in 2027.
What this means for your portfolio
In plain English: the bank is stuck between weak demand and hotter inflation signals, with fuel and a weaker peso doing the pushing. That mix raises the odds of tighter policy ahead, which can pressure rate sensitive assets and keep a floor under local yields. If you have Chile exposure, watch December's meeting, inflation expectations, and energy moves for the next cue.
