Donald Trump is scheduled to complete a security agreement with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland's leader, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, in New York on Tuesday at 10.30 a.m. local time, aligned with the UN General Assembly. Copenhagen announced the timing and venue.
What the deal does and the fight it settles
After months of talks, the signing is intended to end a feud over Greenland, a semi-autonomous part of Denmark that flared into a major diplomatic crisis among NATO members in January. The clash followed Trump, who, after assuming office, repeatedly floated annexing Greenland or seizing control of the island. Frederiksen said Greenland stays under Danish sovereignty, describing the outcome as "a good agreement," and added, "It's entirely possible to retain sovereignty while having closer cooperation on security and defense." Detailed provisions have not yet been made public.

On Friday, Trump said an agreement had been reached and wrote that it would grant the US "permanent control over security" in Greenland, with participation in decisions on the presence of other nations' forces and on high-risk investments, plus an expanded US military footprint on the island. Reuters reported Monday that the US intends to bring one military base in southern Greenland back into operation and establish another outpost on the east coast, citing three people familiar with the plans.
