What Endicott Said

In a Monday interview with Bloomberg Television, David Endicott cautioned that the White House's plan to align U.S. drug costs with those in other countries may lead some companies to skip European launches rather than accept lower prices that could affect the large U.S. market. As he put it, "different prices outside the US are going to be negotiated by the US." He also said, "We're trying to make sure we maintain access as broadly as we can, but obviously being responsible to shareholders."

Alcon's Position

Headquartered in Switzerland and specializing in eye care - from surgical equipment to contact lenses and medicines - Alcon was part of a cohort of nine pharma and biotech companies that struck drug-pricing deals with U.S. officials at the end of August. The goal is to keep Alcon's medicines accessible to U.S. patients as the administration works to tie American prices to those in other developed markets. Endicott noted, "Every market is going to develop its own reimbursement system, its own negotiation, and we do that around the world," and added, "We'll continue to push around the world to figure out what that implication means as we negotiate prices as we always have."
